First Couple Weeks

These first couple weeks have been very different from last years internship. My first day I was put to work immediately as if I had never left. It has been very busy in the office helping everyone out with different tasks. The World Cup win by the US and exit by France (I have a lot of French teammates) has put me in jubilant spirits so right now I am coming to work every day with a huge smile on my face.

Nor Cal

I go to the University of Nevada, Reno. I will be a fifth year senior and am set to graduate in December with a Finance degree and Economics and European History minors. I just got done playing 4 years of tennis for my university and that is why it has taken me longer than 4 years to graduate. I love competing and sports. This is my second year in the internship program so I am hoping for added responsibilities this year and new experiences. For those of you who are new…the Itasca trip is amazing. You are going to love it. Everything is first class. I am not that interested in the NBA anymore, mainly because I think it is rigged and the Suns got jobbed by David Stern and the Spurs a couple years ago. But I will say the Celtics are winning in 6. I am way more interested in the World Cup though. It is about time the USA got some respect internationally for our national team. I am waking up early every morning to watch the games!

Summer 2010: The Biggest Ever!

It’s getting towards the end of March and most of the Gallagher branches have now selected their 2010 Summer Interns. This year we will have a record 180 first and second-year interns joining the GBS and BSD offices around the country.

For nine weeks they will be immersed in the world of insurance brokerage, risk management and consulting – which will hopefully guide them in their choice of career upon graduating. They will spend the first two weeks learning about the operations of their respective branches before heading to AJG’s corporate headquarters in Itasca, IL for a week of orientation, tours, team-building and intensive classes – plus some fun, too!

Look for comments from them throughout the summer to give you a taste of the experience.

July Starts

One month has finished and it was a great experience. The best part of my month was definitely learning from everyone in the office and getting to know everyone a little more. I was given a nickname last week which is DJ Tony Muffins. That was pretty interesting. The office has been great. The best part of the day is when everyone goes to eat their lunch in the conference room together. I hope July is as much fun as June.

First Two Days

I am a student at the University of Nevada at Reno and I am working at the GBS Branch in Sacramento. Yesterday was my second day at work and so far it has been a great experience. Everyone has been extremely helpful in acclimating me to how things work in the office. There haven’t been any real surprises so far. Yesterday I pulled in my first lead so that was exciting. I am kind of disappointed that there aren’t any water cooler talks, but that is because our office is high tech and use yahoo messenger. Everyone here rocks.

Sacramento Office

Located in the middle of Sacramento ghetto, our office, like somebody once called it, reminds me of a community apartment or dormitory. You always know if someone sneezes at the end of the hall, brings donuts, or pretends to sleep behind the computer screen. Like in every dorm, no one likes to do the dishes, everyone complains about the room temperature, and supports a sport team that seems to never be able to win a game. Nevertheless, everyone seems to be obsessed with either kids, dogs, or food; sometimes even all of these at the same time.

We LOVE to work as much as we love to play, hug our clients as we do our friends, and treat them as part of our own family. We learn our news from Youtube, discuss it through YahooIM, and interpret it into the PDC (Performance Driven Culture). Also, little things make us happy. It doesn’t matter if it’s a thank you email from one of the clients, a scheduled marketing appointment for a group of 2 lives, a Jelly Belly jar on Kelly’s desk, or a recited quote from the Anchorman or the Office.

The sad thing is that the more comfortable I feel myself around here, the more I realize I’m going to miss this place with all the characters who work here:

Craig: Brain-man

Dale: Big Daddy

Simon: Swashbuckle

Kelly: Mama Mia

Megan: Mega Prega

John B: Rip Van Winkle

Jon P: Pyle of DJ

Corrine: Rin-Run

Renee: Big Mama

Lee: The Lady Babe

Debby: The banker

Tracie: Two shoes

Vinny: The big V

Sherida: Fitness fanatic

Rob: Hot shot

Lisa & Cindy: The twins
